The Benefits of
Rotation Feeding
Imagine that you had to eat the same meal every day for the rest of your life. Well, this is basically what a lot of us do to our dogs. We pick a brand and a kind of dog food and that's it. Although feeding a consistent diet isn't a horrible thing (assuming your dog is getting the nutrients he needs) some pet nutritionists recommend something called "rotation feeding".

What Is Rotation Feeding?
Rotation Feeding is exactly what it sounds like. It's all about variety. It's a nutritional and holistic approach to dog food. In the wild, our dogs' ancestor (the wolf) eats a variety of foods every day. This allows them to gain nutrients from a variety of sources. It means the same thing for our little wolves. It also gives them some variety so they don't get bored with their food.
What Are the Benefits?
Although there are quite a few benefits to feeding your dog a number of foods, there are a few specifically that stand out from the rest.
More Complete Nutrition
You'll notice a lot of pet foods on store shelves touting that they are a "complete and balanced" diet. Although a number of different ingredients contain the same vitamins, minerals, and nutrients, they don't contain the same level of those things.
For instance, beef and salmon are both great sources of protein. Beef contains much more iron than salmon and is lower in cholesterol, while salmon contains more Omega-3 fatty acids than beef and is lower in fat. By rotating through a number of ingredients in your dog's food each week or each month, he's more likely to get a better balance of nutrients.
Meal Time Becomes Exciting
If you've ever dealt with a "picky eater" you know how frustrating it can be. Picky eating can result from certain health issues, but it can also just be a harmless though annoying personality trait of a semi-privileged dog who has had better food and won’t be satisfied with anything less.
By rotating your pup's proteins, he not only gets different flavors, but different textures as well. It's like a brand new experience is waiting for them every time they run to their bowl.
Reduced Risk of Food Allergies
Food allergies in dogs generally develop when a dog is overexposed to certain ingredients. Because most dogs eat the same brand and kind of dog food and treats for years on end, this can be a common occurrence.
Ingredients like beef, corn, wheat and dairy are commonly used in most dog foods and treats. Because of this, many dogs can no longer process these ingredients. Even worse, developing an allergy to one ingredient can lead to a "chain reaction" of sorts...causing a dog to develop allergies to other ingredients.
Rotating the foods and ingredients in your dog's diet is an easy way to combat overexposure to certain ingredients and help prevent food allergies.
